Hi, 1991 4x4 hard body. How do I remove the torsion bars from the front crossmember? I have to remove the transmission to replace it and the clutch. Do the torsion bars simply unbolt from the front? If so, can I just bolt them back in, or is there an adjustment required? I have to put in a new 5spd trans and clutch.
Thanks in advance
Tom

Put the truck on jackstands.. loosen the torsion bar adjuster bolts at the rear mount. You'll see the adjuster move down out of the crosmember. Keep going.. Once they are all the way loose, pull them out, then use a big screwdriver and a hammer to remove the circlip from the front of the adjuster (where the torsion bar goes in). Once you do this, take a jack and jack the lower A arm until its parallel with the ground. The adjuster can be removed and the torsion bar will just slide right out (might need a few taps from a mallot to loosen it up). Reinstall with the lower arm horizontal on each side. Makes it easy and ensures that all the splines are engaged.
