Ok all you Guru's! Both of my inner CV boots are shot! I really don't want to have to take the axle out to replace. Is there a possible way to use the outer 2 piece/split boots for the inner boots? I really don't see where there is a big difference.
Thanks for all your help!

Yes you can use those but they arent recommended and usually dont hold up very long. Dont get the zip up ones, i have however had a little luck with the screw together boots.

I would not recommend it. The proper way to replace the cv boots is to pull the cv out. If you are going to go through the trouble to pull the boots might as well replace the cv axle.

Boots are about $9 each x 4. Reman CVs are $90 each x 2.

IMHO, if they are worn, also, replace the CV. Otherwise, just do the boots. Huge cost difference.

Instead of getting into my old truck, why don't I just replace it with a new one? smiley36

I think he's saying they don't make split-type inner boots, but they do make them for the outers. I think he wants to know if they're interchangeable. I believe the inners and outers are different sizes (obviously) and I doubt that they'd interchange, but I've never tried it.

I've tried the bolt together kind and couldn't keep them from losing grease.

Then there are the glue together type. You might have one chance to get them to seal...and grease and glue don't mix.

Also there is a boot that is made from stretchable rubber and you use a cone to put it on.

I can't find split boots for much less than $25.

I have 2 good axles and one outer boot is starting to split...all are oxidized.

$13.99 @ Advance, Kragen, Shuck's and Checker. (Clicky)
Outers are typically cheaper than inners. These are the cheapest I found.

Thanks all for your replies! It's been many years ago since I replaced the pasengers side half shaft and boot. Is it possible to just drop it from the diff, clean, grease, and replace boot? Really don't have the place and time to yank the tire, spindle/brakes, then the shaft. Just wondering. I think I might have to suck it up and do it! I was afraid of the hole size on the boots being different. Oh well, it was just a thought of saving time.
Thanks again! Chug

i didnt check em with a digital caliper or anything but the inners look about the same as the outers.

the 1 i got the other day was a inner for 25 at autozone. i avoid advance since they are fuhking idiots over here. i will be returning it as i didnt need it after all. you could probably do it from under the vehicle if you wanted to, but it would be soo much easier if you just removed it.
once its off the diff you just have to get the tire off, undo the upper ball joint, get the snap ring off from behind the hub cap, probably have to remove the shock and its out. i just did this yesterday on my HB. its a mess but easy.

That's how it is done. Be sure to jack from the lower control arm near the wheel. Otherwise there will be nothing to support the LCA when you release the upper ball joint.
