OK. So here's a question. I am planning on towing my Frontier out on a trailer with my K5. I have this fear that since I have a tow-rig I need to use it, for if I don't I will be sorry.
Not knowing jack squat about what that itinerary really means, how conducive is it to having a tow-rig? Would I say, need to leave it somewhere and do the entire run with the Frontier, or are the spots so far away from each other that I would really need to get it on the trailer and tow it from place to place. Additionally, I have multiples of some spare parts and of course I want to bring everything AND the kitchen sink. If the tow-rig follows the run would I need to make sure everything is on the Frontier or would I be close enough to the tow-rig to be able to leave larger parts and pieces on it (like spare axle shafts). I need a good, thorough and honest answer on these questions, because Bryan (bgaidan) and I are both planning on coming this time around and we both plan on towing (at the moment). Thanks y'all. |

In the past, all tow rigs have been left at someones house, and the run done by the trail vehicle on it's own. The only exception to this I know of is Mikey, who did not run the entire event 2 years ago, but only a couple of days, and his buggy wasn't street legal to drive between trails so he didnt have much of a choice.

I have more than adequate room to house towrigs & trailers if you need a place to park them. There is also room for an 18 wheeler or two in front of my house if anyone goes that route.

These trips really are condusive to bringing trail rigs with you on the run. Unless you have a spouse or friend who wants to drive the tow rig to the next spot, which sometimes can be a couple of days later.

Get it to AZ. Park it, and drive the Frontier for the entire run. We don't come out where we go in in most cases.

I cannot believe you would even think about that Chris. Towing it to AZ is one thing, but having a tow rig on an overland run?!?!?! Not to mention the Frontier will get way better gas mileage than the K5. Also, it's a challenge to see how much you can get in your vehicle and hope that will be enough...all of these little challenges MAKE the event.

His Fronty is perfectly streetable.. I take it he just doesn't want to drive it 20 hours to AZ (though I can't imagine that the old Blazer would be a great long-haul tow rig... thought you were talking about using the work truck... or is there no chance of getting the one you wanted in time?)

Well, a lot of things have changed:
1. My K5 is still in horrible disrepair. It now needs a radiator and at least the heads reworked. The Class IV hitch is still not installed, and the carburetor is in pieces all over my kitchen at the moment. Also the heater core is dead and need replacing. 2. My new work truck ended up getting ordered wrong and so I will not have the shiny new Dodge 2500 until just AFTER the AZ Run is over. 3. My Frontier is pleasantly better to drive now that I have all the alignment issues taken care of completely. |
