4+ rated trails, and some that DR mentioned sound awesome. I also like the Combo idea. One of the great things about our truck is we can do Overland trips. Try doing that in other vehicles. I did all of Moab essentially Overland with some few exceptions, my little stove and the trailer hitch being the big items. Seriously cannot wait for AZ Run IV!

Hi Guys,

So am I going to be able to make these trails with a mostly stock vehicle? I will have 32" MTRs, I may have gears for the T-case by then, if AC is able to get them soon, but other than that, it will be mostly stock. CC 4x4 SC

Thanks,

Rob

Hey Rob, we have a lot of pre-running to do before we can answer that question 100%. But, our goal is to have alternate trails if there are trails that are not do-able by all. But, again, we don't want to say for sure until we have pre-run all these trails.

Thanks Guys.

I'm sure Andy will come up with somethings good for us.

Who knows, by then I may be locked front and rear. I doubt it, but stranger things have happened in my life.

Was there a suggest list of goodies each person should bring. I keep a lot of stuff in the truck at all times, but there may be something that you have learned from the last three years that would be a big help.

I try to keep in the truck:

Flashlights, more than I can carry at one time
A spotlight
Emergency first aid supplies
Fire exstinguisher
Tools
Tow strap and recovery equiptment
3-4 pairs of gloves
Tarp and blanket
Jumper cables
Extra headlight and taillight bulbs
fuses
Duct tape
Metal coat hangers
FSR radios
limited amount of lubricants

Any suggestions you can offer would be welcome.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob, welcome to N4W!

There are three mods I'd recommend first and foremost: Sliders, steering, and a locker. There are 2 trails where we're tossing around making a locker required. One will definitely be locker required. The Tcase gears will come in handy too! There will be plenty of trails that will be challenging but doable in a stock rig, but do be prepared for rocker panel damage without a set of sliders. The steering is a no-brainer. Nissan steering sucks and isn't up the task of hard wheeling. If you still have stock steering, be sure to pack along spare parts.

Am looking forward to meeting you. You were one of the first guys I remember from the AC board way back when.

Look for a full itinerary soon. A few of us spent time in the map books on Sunday and we think we have a pretty good list made out. We'll be hitting a lot of the same stuff they hit during the annual Jeeper's Jamboree out here.

Hi,

Thanks Andy! I'm looking forward to meeting you and all the group of guys out there.

If by chance I haven't been able to upgrade everything that I need to by the trip next year, could I park the truck for the more difficult trails and just ride withsomeone else for that trail/day? I know I hate to even think about that, but with Tuition for both the kids, and some other expenses, I just can't see it all getting done before next years trip.

Sliderz are no problem, I can make those here and have them ready to go. I will work on the rear locker, but it makes more sense for me to both at the same time if I am going to do it at all. Did you lock the front of your rig?

I got on the website for the last run and looked at the list of suggested items. It looks like I have quite a bit of it ready to go.

Talk to you guys later!

Rob

IMHO, it doesn't make sense to wait and lock both ends. I have a front locker as of quite recently, but don't need it 95% of the time. A front locker gives you about 10% more ability than a rear one.

Sliders - check!

And yes, the two difficult days will be driven on loops and we come out where we started. I do anticipate some guys will park their rigs for those days, and there should be plenty of open seats....or you could even hike and spot, as the trails are short and technical.

This run will have a good mix of everything and should surpass AZ Run I-III in every way, except for maybe weather. AZIII with all the rain and mud will be hard to duplicate.

Hi,

I understand what you are saying about the lockers. I just know the type of person that I am: I try not to do stuff half way if I can help it. Besides, I know there are placs that an extra 10% is not just comfortable, but manditory. Besides, if I have to tear out one diff, why not make it two and get the gears at the same time? Right now I don't have the luxury of two vehicles, so when it comes apart, it needs to be done at one time.

I'm used to mud all the time around here, so the only cool thing I would miss out on would be the waterfalls and driving through 5 miles of it.

Talk to you later.

I think you'll be fine with rear only but hey if you got the bones why not lock the front. My point is, do not stay home because of being unlocked or onbly locked in the rear. There will be plenty of trails you can run especially with good driving and spotting.

Plus it's a helluva lot easier to drop a rear 3rd member out than it is to drop the front axle. Also, don't consider doing a front locker without beefing the steering.

Hi,

I know, steering is an issue right now. I am trying to find the best solution with out being to overboard. It might be that I do a few minor mods to the steering, and then carry spares. I really don't have intentions of lifting it right now, so the steering angles aren't going to be much of an issue. I'm more worried about the stresses from the locker up front.

If you have to know why I'm not lifing right now, my 6 year old daughter can just barely hoist herself into the truck the way it is. (she is rather petite) I'm not sure with the added height of the tires and a lift, she would be able to do it with a backpack strapped on her.

Mods or not, I need a vacation anyway. I will have plenty of time next year to come out. Even if I have to park my truck for some of the runs, I know I will still have a good time.

Thanks,

Rob

The calmini setup is under $500 and holds up well. I have the SLR setup and it's performed well, but it's also much more expensive.

Regardless of what you do, you're welcome on the run and we look forward to meeting you.

I've got one word for those who are gonna make this run:

SPARES.

That's all. Just:

SPARES.

I have a feeling there will be alot of carnage on this run... By next year, I have a feeling the Pathfinder will be more tube than sheetmetal... Just waiting on my own house to start making the "actual" modifications...

Did I mention?

SPARES?

Tires and sliders was all AZ Run III took for me to get my stock Xterra through unscathed (more or less, go read the carnage thread - I finally scratched my sliders... woohoo!) Wheel bearing grease afterwards and a tow strap should get you through.

Although I do believe the only thing that got me through was the tires and sliders. Big old MT/R's and rock sliders. Lifted trucks with all terrain tires needed to be towed sometimes. Unlifted trucks with mud tires sometimes towed them. Welcome to tropical Arizona.
