That's a lot of drilling there.

Yeah it is. I would of course be doing the drilling with my own bits if someone just lends me a drill. If we can get one I will be satisfied. If we can get 2 I will be ecstatic. There are 3 damaged studs.

The problem I see is that we'd have to drill through cast iron to do that, which would take a good amount of time (and a lot of bits). If you want to try it, we can definitely try. I have a monster 3/4hp gear reduction drill which will do the job. It tends to break bits a lot though. I broke a 1/2" bit in half with it trying to drill out my rear swaybar.

If the studs had no easy outs in them, you could just drill them out completely and retap the holes.. fairly easy to do.. but with broken easy outs.. it makes things a lot more difficult.

The simplest solution may be to just drop in a new/used wheel hub. Would take all of a couple hours to do at the most.

Wold a frontier one work? If so there is a pretty good chance of finding one in a yard around here as well.

If hes arriving on Sunday, 99% of the yards are closed then. :/ Only one that I know is open is Ecology, which doesnt have many newer vehicles.

What about lincoln locking a sacrificial auto hub? lol

Welding a hub on there doesn't sound like such a bad idea...Can you weld the hub to cast iron?

Well replacing the whole hub was the original plan. I was buying one for 75 rats but it was not gonna get here in time. It wouldn't take that long to replace it. Bone yards in this area want like 150 for the part if I am lucky enough to find one. A frontier one would work but again there is the problem of finding one. If we can just get one of the studs done I should be fine. since the they all still have the partial studs at least in there preventing the hub from rotating if not holding it tight.

If this will be too much of a pain maybe it is best if I don't go. I don't wanna inconvenience yall the first time I meet you.

Well, if you can get this thing through the run as is, I'll be pulling my Frontier ones off in the next month and I'll sell them to you cheap.

going SAS.

Maybe, as long as you heat up the whole shebang to a dull red heat prior to welding, using nickel electrode, and then keeping it near 1000F( or as close to that as you can) for a few hours before cooling... but that's just speaking for welding cast iron -in general...

Ivan, As long as you get here soon enough to allow some time to work on it, we can give it our best shot. If it works, great. mY welder is only a 110V 100A wirefeed. I do know that System-F is bringing his 220V arc welder if we need more power. If you'll do the drilling work, I'd be more than happy to hit it with the welder for you.

I know for sure that Sunday evening is going to be hectic with all the last minute fixes. I still have a lot of things to do on my truck, but will try to get them out of the way on Saturday morning.

Even if you can get 4-5 studs in its' better than 3 and will probably hold.

Screw it I will show up as early as possible on sunday and see what we can do. Even if I have to run on 3 oh well, if it breaks I will limp home. I will definitely take you up on the ones from your frontier once you go sas. I do have some spare studs in case the three in there break. I also have easy outs and bits. Is someone bringing a portable drill on the run? Just in case.

I can bring my drill. I have a 400W power inverter mounted in the truck + optima yellow top that will run the drill pretty nicely.

thats not too bad. I'd be willing to chip in to help out.. anyone else?

Now, that is the wheel spindle hub/bearing housing, right?.. not the locking hub.

Swapping the hub will require swapping out bearings as well (which I can do). If all goes well, we could carefully drive out the old races, wheel seals, etc and reuse them if needed. I've reused mine in the past with no problems. Ivan can always put in new bearings/seals later if he wants.. Also, there is a checker/autozone.. and 24hr walmart lol right down the road if we need anything.

Ok the situation has been resolved. I hunted the local boneyards and got a wheel hub with wheel bearings in place. I replaced it but managed to break a stud in the new hub too. I'm an idiot. So now I am running with 5 studs on each side and that should be fine. At a later date I do want to drill out the stud and retap though with a larger bolt so i will be asking questions about how to do that. I will still be showing up on sunday but mostly to drink beer and help wrench.

Oh and by Marshall's reaction when I told him I got the new hub it seems I have come across as non-mechanically inclined. Rest assured I am wrench familiar.

I'm not sure what Carlton has in his front diff, but he sheered off all 6 hub studs at Coal Creek a year ago. It was quite a sight. The video is on the NOAS website somewhere.
