MODS: We only have 54 days left until AZrun6, and I'm not really sure what I should do next to the Shopping Cart. Should I get some skid plates? If so, which ones? Or, get an ARB? Or do you recommend something different?
PARTS: As far as spare parts, what do you guys recommend bringing? I could make a trip to Ecology and look for a few things, and I've got that 89 HB sitting in my garage. Is there anything off of that I could use? Should I consider bringing tranny fluid, power steering fluid, etc. or was that unessesary last year? GROUPS: I know we are spitting this up into two groups, but what exactly is going to be the breakdown of it. I've read that its going to be like this: 3.0-4.0 trails for the lesser capable vehicles, and the 4.0-5.0 trails for the SAS guys, etc. If thats the way its going to be, what trails will the 3.0-4.0 trucks be running? Or are we all running the same trails and spitting the groups to cut down the amount of "traffic" on the trails? CAMPING: I was just reading an earlier thread where someone said they will be streamlining their gear next year so they dont have to load and unload so much stuff. With that being said, what is everyone else bringing, what are they leaving behind that they wish they could bring? I just dont want to be out there with a bed full of crap that is unecessary. How much water did everyone bring? I only have enough room in my bed for one icechest (I'll be limited on cold items) so I can only pack so much food, any recommendations on what to bring? What are good snacks to bring that would turn into dust from a couple days of abuse (i.e. chips, cookies)? MANDATORY ITEMS: I know the regular stuff, CB, FUEL, tire repair kit, trashbags, flashlights, tarp, WATER, warm clothes, TP, batteries, tent and sleeping bag (DUH) etc. Anything else someone would want to add to that? I know thats a lot of things, but I just want to make sure I'm fully prepared when we do this. These, for the most part, are probably stupid questions but I've never been on one of these, and I think being out in the desert and going "DAMN I forgot/should've brought [INSERT RANDOM OBJECT HERE]..." would really suck! P.S. If you reply with a link to this, I've already read it, and most of my questions are to clarify it a little bit more. Thanks in advance. Sorry for the long post. |

Here's a list I posted up from a previous run....
OTHER THINGS TO BRING This list is by no means complete, but it's everything that comes to mind as I type this up. Truck Stuff: Minimum 5 gallons extra fuel. We'll be running the first 3 days without a gas station in sight. All the spare parts you can muster....tierods, hubs, centerlinks, U-joints, a tire plug kit, and anything else you think you may or may not break. A full size spare tire, jack, and tools. I highlift is better, as long as your bumpers or sliders are up to the task. CB Radio - We've had guys use FRS, but we MUCH PREFER a CB. We'll be on channel 17 "Swankynet". Extra fluids, gear oil, engine oil, water, PS and brake fluid, etc. You just never know. A portable air souce is recommended. Front and rear recovery points mandatory. Good condition straps and shackle rings for recovery. Bring tools, duct tape, bailing wire - whatever is needed to fix anything. Trucks need to be in solid mechanical condition. If there's something that's been needing fixing, do it BEFORE the run so we can minimize trail breakage. People Stuff: Clothing for extremes - 20-100 degrees. It's the desert...it's hard to predict the weather. Nights can be very cold, and there's a slim chance of it being wet - just ask participants of AZ Run III. A warm sleeping bag and tent Food and beverage for 5 days straight trail riding. Also provisions to prepare that food. Minimum 5 gallons of water Flashlights and extra batteries Camera / Camcorder A poncho or something to lay on wet ground with if needed. Camp chairs, tables, and any other accessories you enjoy camping with. Trash bags so you can pack out what you pack in. First Aid kit - well equipped with Aspirin, Ibuprophen, etc. and Benadryl if you have allergies - the dust will bother you. Also anything for bee stings, particularly if you're allergic. Baby wipes, towells, toothbrush, etc...whatever you think you need to feel clean and comfortable for 5 days in the desert with no facilities A positive attitude. Whiners will be asked to go home. 1998 Frontier 4x4, 2002 Xterra 4x4, and Z28 street rocket Pass here and go on. You're on the road to heaven - Kerouac |

Now looking at the list of trails for the week, and seeing that the way more challenging trails are in the start of the week, would it be a better idea for me to join up with you guys at the end of the week? Give me info!

Any suggestions for carrying extra gas on an Xterra? Guess I could get a few of those smaller 2 gallon cans and put 'em in the roof basket.... but then where would the used beer cans go?

Extra gas is only needed on the first 3 day leg, and we have a common campsite the first 2 nights. My recommendation is to get your gas, but leave it at camp so you're not hauling it. Then, fill up at camp after day 1 or 2. For most trucks and extra 5 gallons should be sufficient to run days 1-3. We will have a teen camp guard that will watch everyone's stuff for $10 per truck per day.

The cut is all his. My cut is the peace of mind that I can leave hundreds of dollars worth of camping equipment and know that it will be there when I get back.
